Andy Gray - 1983 -1985:
When Howard Kendall paid £250,000 to Wolves for Andy Gray more than a few eyebrows were raised and it seemed a desperate act by a manger in charge of team who were struggling. What the club got was a player with such an infectious personality that he raised the dressing room morale to such an extent that a side of talented individuals started playing as a talented team.
His incredible aerial ability and courage were without question but a lot of people were astonished by his skill on the ground. It did not take Gray long to forge a formidable partnership with fellow Scot Graeme Sharp, both score in the FA Cup final win over Watford in 1984 to secure the first trophy for 14 years.
Early in the 1984-85 season Gray found himself sidelined through injury, being replaced by Adrian Heath, and only got back into the side when Heath in turn was injured. On his return Gray found his best form and along with Sharp shot Everton to League and European triumphs. Gray himself was to set the team on their way in the European Cup Winners Cup final when he scored the first goal in the victory over Rapid Vienna.
During the summer of 1985 Kendall bought Gary Lineker in order to strengthen the forward line and Gray fell down the pecking order and had no choice but to leave. He joined Aston Villa and later had short spells with Glasgow Rangers and West Bromwich Albion before going into the media as an expert summariser with Sky Sports.
