Colin Harvey - 1962 -1974:
After joining Everton straight from school in 1962, Colin Harvey was to enjoy a 40 year association with the club as player, coach. manager and youth team manager. Harvey made his debut on 25 September 1963 on mo less a stage as the San Siro Stadium in Milan, he had been drafted in to take the place of the injured Jimmy Gabriel for the return leg of the European Cup first round tie. Everton were to lose the game 1-0 but Harvey did not let anybody down and appeared unfazed by a partisan 90,000 Italian crowd.
He only played two more games that season but the 1964-65 season saw Harvey start to establish himself in the first team as he developed into a fine midfield player. The following season he only missed two games in all competitions and was to prove pivotal in Everton run to the FA Cup final in 1966. Against Manchester United in the semi-final he scored the decisive, and all to rare, goal that sent the club to their first final since the war.
By the 1967-68 season Harry Catterick had added Alan Ball and Howard Kendall to the already established Harvey to form possibly the finest midfield in Everton's history, leading them to be called 'The Holy Trinity', Harvey himself was dubbed the 'white Pele'. He was noted for his speed, fine tackling and the fact that he could run from box to box all afternoon but what was often overlooked was that he had wonderful ball control and a full range of passes. The only area of his game that was lacking was his goalscoring ability and surely had this been better he would have earned more than the one England cap that he gained.
Season 1969-70 was to be the pinnacle of Harvey's career as Everton stormed to the league title and Harvey himself scored a spectacular goal to clinch the 2-0 win over West Bromwich Albion that sealed the club's seventh championship success.
The end of the following season was to see the consistency that he had shown in the seven season since his debut, begin to take it's toll and in his final three seasons with Everton Harvey only played 56 times. He left the club in 1974 for a 13 month spell with Sheffield Wednesday were he performed well until injury forced him to end his playing career.
After he finished playing he turned to coaching, and turned out to be a natural. When Howard Kendall took over the managership of Everton in 1981 it was Harvey he turned to to become his assistant. When Kendall left the club in 1987 Harvey was promoted to manager, but this did not work out and in November 1990 he was sacked. Kendall was brought back to the club and he immediately reinstated Harvey as his assistant, there was no success this time and both left the club in 1993.
In June of 1997 Harvey returned to the club and took charge of the youth team were he guided them to victory in the FA Youth cup of 1998. Colin Harvey finally retired from from the staff at Everton in 2003 due to health problems, so ending his association with the club he had loved all of his life.
