Wednesday 24th October 1928 saw Everton appear in their first Charity Shield match after winning the League title for the 1927-28 season. Their opponents at Old Trafford, Manchaester United were Blackburn Rovers, who had won the FA Cup.

The teams for the match were:

Everton:  A Davies, W Creswell, J O'Donnell, T Griffiths, H Hart, A Virr, H Ritchie, R Forshaw, W Dean, A Weldon, A Troup.  

Blackburn Rovers:  J Crawford, R Roxburgh, H Jones, H Healless, T Baxter, J O'Dowd, G Thornewell, S Puddefoot, J Roscamp, T McLean, A Rigby.
