The History of Everton Football Club

The First Overseas Tour

After finishing runners up in League and FA Cup semi finalists Everton embarked on their first overseas tour during the spring of 1905. The club had made a few excursions to Ireland over the years but this trip was the first to Europe not only for Everton but any English league side. Setting off from Liverpool's Exchange Station on April 27th the tour would take place in the Austro-Hungary Empire and would last three weeks. I was not going to be a holiday for the players or officials as the team was contracted to play eight games in the three weeks.

After a 48 hour journey by rail and boat the clubs first game on foreign soil took place in Budapest on April 30th with Magyar Athletic Club supplying the opposition, Everton ran out 11-2 winners and this set the tone for the whole trip. The team then travelled to Vienna to play three games including an exhibition game against fellow tourists, Tottenham Hotspurs, then of the Southern League. The club then made their way to Prague where they were scheduled to play four games, including another game agaist Tottenham, before returning to England and arriving at Exchange Station on 19th May.

Despite scheduled to play eight games only seven results appear to be available.
