Trevor Steven - 1983 -1989:
Trevor Steven signed for Everton after impressing Howard Kendall over the two years following his debut in 1981 but to capture the talented midfielder Kendall had to pay £300,000, a considerable transfer fee for 19 year old. He made his debut in the first game of the 1983-84 season, a 1-0 home win against Stoke City.
His first season did not start as he would have hoped and the step up to the First Division appeared to have overawed the youngster and he was dropped for a period during the Winter months. When he returned he started to show the pace and ball control that had impressed Kendall and by the end of the season he had won an FA Cup winners medal, when he was part of the Everton side that won 2-0 against Watford.
He had slotted in well into the right-hand side of the midfield and along with his midfield partners of Reid, Bracewell and Sheedy drove Everton to League and European honours by the end of the 1984-85 season. Steven played in all but two games and, although he was seen as a goal provider, scored 16 times in all competitions. Two of most important goals came in the European Cup Winners Cup when he scored the third in the semi final and then in the final put Everton 2-0 up.
To ease the disappointment of finishing runners-up in both league and FA Cup, Trevor Steven joined Reid, Lineker and Stevens in the England squad that traveled to Mexico for the 1986 World Cup. The following year Everton stormed to the title again and on a personal level Steven ended the season as top scorer in the league with 14 goals.
During this period of success for the team Steven had formed an outstanding partnership with Gary Stevens on the right side of the side, but when Stevens was sold to Glasgow Rangers in 1988 Steven's form dipped and in 1989 he joined his old team mate at Rangers. Steven had ambitions of European football and, because of the ban on English club's, a move to Scotland seemed logical. In 1991 he moved again, this time abroad, when he joined Olympique Marseille but only stayed for one season before rejoined Rangers. Trevor Steven retired from playing in 1997.
